The focus of our lesson plans for these swimmers starts with Water Familiarization - being comfortable in water, then moves to Breath Control - getting the face wet and going under the water, Floating Independently - not only a life-saving safety skill but also gets the swimmer to stay horizontal in the water and Rotation - being able to move and change direction, an essential water safety skill.

Only after each of these skills (and more) are achieved do we move on to teaching each of the individual swimming strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle). By teaching the FOUNDATIONS we create a strong starting point for our beginner swimmers so they can move on to the next phase of their learning.

Jumping in too early to teach specific strokes can leave the swimmer and the teacher feeling frustrated and defeated. It will also start a cycle of incorrect muscle memory and a swimmer who struggles in the water.

The best parts about our plans are they include 1. 'how to teach' each skill and activity and 2. they can be used incrementally from Beginner to Intermediate to Advanced as the learners progress through their aquatic journey gaining water confidence and skills.
